There is nothing greater than appreciation for what you already have. My main motivation to create is the commonness of nature’s gifts to be overlooked and the desire to invoke happiness within those who can’t seem to find it on their own. My work walks the line between objects of comfort and objects of challenge for this reason.
Although we all strive to be happy, we don’t always remember that it’s a process to get there. This process is sometimes difficult in the moment but it’s those moments of questioning our strength, ideals, and who we want to be that defines who we are. Through providing moments of slight tension, objects that require a second thought or a questioning, I hope to give other’s something to process.
All of my work allows for a glimpse into the process of their creation. Showing the human hand within the final product gives it individuality, a sense of compassion and intent towards strictly the one who possesses it. Knowing that another person produced an object that you cherish, fingerprints as proof, provides motivation that you too can produce and positively influence others.
The weight that metal carries both physically and conceptually is of great importance to my practice. I create objects in metal that are usually found in temporal states within nature. These fleeting objects are reborn into a permanent state, able to be cherished for a lifetime. The process by which metal is cast follows a similar pattern. The object you first create then must go through a process of transformation where the original is destroyed resulting in a contemporary creation.
I strive to create a duality – a challenging of ones beliefs in order to advance their self understanding while providing comfort through objects, little reminders of why life is so worth living. Through the scope of sculptures that I am offering to the world, I hope to achieve this goal.
